Control of Ectoparasites In Indigenous Malawi Chickens

Abstract

A study was carried out in Mzuzu Agricultural Development Division (MZADD) in 1996/97 in the northern region of Malawi to test different pesticides used in ectoparasite control. Farmers were visited. A sample of local chickens were examined for the presence of ectoparasites on the first day of the experiment. Ectoparasite levels and species were determined. Birds were treated using different treatments: water for the control, cypermethrin high cis (Ectomin, Ciba- Geigy), flumethrin 2 % m/v (Bayticol, Bayer) and coumaphos (Asuntol 50 % wettable powder, Bayer). Clinical examination was done from the 4th day post treatment to check for the reduction in ectoparasite levels. The second treatment was done on the 7th day after clinical examination.
