Abstract

A study was done between March 2010 - February 2011 on 105 pigs grouped as adults and youngs at various designated slaughtered slabs during routine meat inspection for “milk spots” on the liver in Zuru, Nigeria,. The examination of the intestines for adult worms of Ascaris suum was similarly carried out to correlate the findings on the liver. Sixty-three (60%) of the pigs examined had milk spots. The infection by ages and sex were statistically insignificant. Infection in the males was greatly lower compared with that observed in the females. It was concluded that ascariasis was prevalent among pigs reared in Zuru, Nigeria and was causing significant economic losses due to the liver condemnation and retarded growth.
