Journal Processes
Articles, book reviews, and special reports all go through distinct processes prior to publication. The process for articles is overseen by the Managing Editor, with the processes for book reviews and special reports managed by the Book Reports Editor and Special Reports Editor respectively.
Following submission, articles are assessed by 1-2 board members, who determine that the article complies with the Makerere Historical Journal’s requirements and thematic focus and assess whether it should be sent for peer review. Following that assessment, the submission is sent for double-blind, anonymous peer review. Following that assessment, the Managing Editor and Editor-in-Chief will determine whether to accept, reject or (most commonly) request the author “revise and resubmit” the article.
Articles designation “revise and resubmit” will be provided with feedback from the anonymous reviewer and the editorial board. Upon resubmission the article will be assessed by three board members to determine whether the necessary edits have been completed and to flag further edits necessary for acceptance. Following this evaluation, the Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor will again determine whether to accept, reject, or request the author “revise and resubmit” and will communicate with the author indicating what further edits are necessary to proceed. Upon this resubmission, the Managing Editor and Editor-in-Chief will provisionally accept it and send it to copyediting.
Book Reviews and Special Reports are managed by their respective editors, who will solicit book reviews and reports individually and will evaluate unsolicited submissions. They will provide feedback and suggested edits, and following their approval, the reviews and reports will be sent to copyediting.
