Abstract

This paper will not attempt to give a systematic account of the campaigns in East Africa of thfe 1914-1918 War. This was already been done with great precision elsewhere.^ What we shall attempt to define are the white attitudes towards the Uganda Africans as filters in particular and the Africans as fighters in general. We shall examine why the black man fought for the white man when he was ignorant of the causes of conflict between white and white, and lastly, we shall discuss conditions of service and what happened to him when he was no longer needed.
